The Christmas Period and the lead up to the big day

Usually the first signs in Kanturk of Christmas coming is the sight of the Lights Committee starting the job of putting up the lights and everybody will agree on what a good job they do in lighting up the town. The lights take a big effort every year and cost a lot in maintenance & upgrading, but they are worth it all.

Kanturk Christmas Street Market 2015

The Annual Christmas Street Market was on Friday Dec. 18th, it turned out to be a tremendous success. A few mistakes were made but overall things were good. It is always a bad day when you do not learn something new.

We had around 30 different participants in the event, differing from Local people involved in arts and crafts, to photographers, to Artists, To local Charities selling Christmas Cards, Local Restaurants displaying their nice things.

What was really great to see was 7 Different Groups of Transition Year Students with their Min Companies displaying & selling their products.
The range of products that the students brought was wide from Car Safety Kits To Bath Bombs To Health Books To Manicure Creams and Heath Books. A very special Well Done and Thanks for coming.

The Market started was this year back to Watergate St. for the first time in a few years, there is something really special about this Street for the Market, the closeness of the buildings making everyone tucked in tight and close together and being in the heart of the town plus the convenience of the Town.
We start at the top with Niall Moynihan and his company Real Meat offering Organic Meat
Bobs Bar with Patrick displaying some lovely and tempting pastries,
McCarthys Butchers having a wide range of delicious food.
Eliza Rodrigues got lots of different curries.
Gala Service Station who are regular visitors were back with plenty of home made Breads,
Bernie Cotter really had a great selection of Christmas ornaments

North Cork Co-Op displaying their wide range of local produce, always remember Kanturk depends a lot on its farming hinterland.

Noreen O'Connell selling her Christmas Cards for the Guide Dogs for the Disabled. The Photo Shop displaying their ware with Rachel as a superb attendant. Michael O'Sullivan with superb Hand Crafted Timber pieces.Across the way was Noreen O'Callaghan and The Womens Open Door Group with Christmas Wreaths & Bouquets

Seasonal Safety Advice Preventing Customer Theft

Christmas Street Market

On Fri. Dec. 18th the annual Christmas Street Market is on, this year it has been decided to bring it back to Watergate St., the one thing great about this venue it is very accessible from all areas of town, Percival St. and The Square are just around the corner, Main St. is at one junction and The Car Park is at the other junction and Strand St. is just a short stroll down the lane and O'Brien St. is just over the bridge. On top of this the Church Car Park is not too far away. A very central location and also one thing great is that is probably the best when you have to factor in the weather.

I will add a few pictures of old to add to the moment so much so you will start not wanting to miss out.

.

This year we have a lot of stalls selling all sorts of things, and one thing great is the amount of Transition Year Students that are taking part with their Mini Companies selling all kinds of novelties from Bath Bombs, Glass Bottle Acoustic Loudspeakers ((  ?? )) and Car Safety Kits.

Then we have some of the regulars with some of their very fine produce to fatten us up over the Christmas period

Also on display will be all types of  meats with one stall specifically
for organic meat all the way from Boherbue.

I must mention Noel the Butcher on Twitter Land as he is always good to  retweet  any post we make which in the time of Digital Marketing that is a big thing.

We have another local  with some fantastic Ornaments which are well worth looking at. Sorry no pictures in advance. Would ruin the surprise.

We have Christmas wreaths and all loads of other goodies, I could go on and on but I have to go now and hopefully I will see you on Friday.

Christmas Lights in Kanturk

The Christmas lights in Kanturk are one of the towns pride and joy at how good they really are. All over the Town Centre we have Lights streaming across the streets and each set are more stunning than the next.
The Lights are organised and put up by a specific Lights Committee which is a broad range of willing volunteers including local electricians Michael O'Riordan and Ned McCarthy and builder Tim Cremin who volunteer their expertise and equipment  as well as help from both The Community Council and Kanturk Chamber Of Commerce, it really is a combined Community effort

On arrival on probably the main road into Kanturk which is Greenane, you are greeted by the ' Welcome To Kanturk ' Light set against the background of a Stone Brick building which is the offices of Tony O'Keeffes Engineers. This is certainly a good start.

You come around the bend and into view comes O'Brien St. which is most likely the most colourful street which is helped by the high Trees which straddle one side of the street which helps when you want to display Christmas Lights. This street also personifies the cross community effort as the Community Council with great help from Jerry Hickey light up the O'Brien St. park, this all helps to make it all spectacular.

Next stop we come over the Bridge and we get to Main St. which is the shortest but certainly does not let us down with a big punch of great lights against the backdrop of the Bank building.
We really are going well !!

Now we get to The Square where all you have to do is look in any direction and the Lights are stretching out in all different ways. The never ending story of our Lights in Kanturk.

Around here you get a full view of Percival St., Church St. and also you can look over your shoulder down Watergate St. all the way down to the Car Park,

Then we arrive to the longest and widest street in Town as in Strand St. where because of the traffic island there are sets on two sides which are supplemented by lights on some of the Trees on the footpaths and all ending up below at The Alley.

Sometimes a picture does not do our Lights justice and there is only one answer to that and come and visit us, and in the process you can call to some of our many shops, restaurants, coffee stops with some lovely nice things or just take in the festive period in one of our many great bars.

One thing is for sure Kanturk may not be a big city but it is proof local effort sometime wins and we end with our Lights. A credit to all involved from the electricians, teleporter driver and technical helpers to the lads doing the Traffic control. All one can say is well done and Thanks!!

Christmas 'Try Town First' Shopping Promotion Dec. 2015

On the run in to Christmas, Kanturk is again making a big effort to promote and advertise itself as a good option to do your Christmas Shopping and all we ask is as our motto says 'Try Town First' and if we have not what you want then go further.

But as a shopping destination we have a lot of great shops from big to small, Supermarkets to Hardware stores, Chemists to Clothes, Cafes to Restaurants, Gift Shops to Toy Shops, Hairdressers and Beauticians so much so in most sectors we have a few options with plenty of of good bars for a visit before you head off.

For the duration of the Shopping promotion, businesses will be doing special deals and offers, so hopefully you will be able to find something to suit what you want in one of the shops that are involved in the promotion.

One great thing about shopping in

Kanturk is that the town has loads of easy accessible parking and you can walk to anywhere in town within a few minutes all we need is you to try it out.

One great thing is that you will find a lot of shops that put customer service to the fore, it will always help when you walk into a business and be greeted with that local smile that greets you.

Convenience is another great thing in that you can get to most places within a few minutes of a walk which is a great thing when you have bags to carry. Also convenient in that to most places in Duhallow you can be home beside the fire within a half an hour.
