The Christmas Period and the lead up to the big day

Usually the first signs in Kanturk of Christmas coming is the sight of the Lights Committee starting the job of putting up the lights and everybody will agree on what a good job they do in lighting up the town. The lights take a big effort every year and cost a lot in maintenance & upgrading, but they are worth it all.

Cork County Council recently put up new signs at Ballymaquirke and Billy Green, that is near Roskeen where you turn off the Main Mallow to Killarney Rd. for Kanturk.
A few grand big signs to show you the way and tell you what is available in Kanturk.

Next up was The Try Town First shopping promotion whereby lots of shops and businesses gave special offers and promotions for a Week End. From what I was told there was some great offers available, this is just another way that we try to Keep the customers we have as well as attract new ones.

In the run up to Christmas The Cashman Family from Dun An Oir had the the misfortune of seeing their house being burnt down but at least one good thing came out of it in that it proved what a tremendous Community Spirit we have in the Town in the amount of Fundraising that was done for the family.

When you see the Boys from St.Colmans National School out Carol Singing for Charity at the Round About on O'Brien St. you know Christmas is getting close. Well Done to all the Boys and Teachers and not to forget the money collectors.

What would the Christmas period in Kanturk be without The Duhallow Choral Society and this year did not let us down. Fantastic as usual.

Another Annual event is the Christmas Market which this year was back to Watergate St., there was loads of stalls with a great atmosphere with most things going right but it did lead to traffic delays, so all we will have to do is reorganise and come back better.

Kanturk Foroige were involved in doing a Santas Grotto last Saturday again doing this for Charity together with The Photo Shop.Pity was they were supposed to be doing a Night Out to raise funds for the Homeless but the weather got so bad it was called off.

The one thing we involved in Kanturk Chamber Of Commerce do is to convince everyone is to 'Try Town First ' and if then you can not find what you are looking for, go ahead and try further afield but give us first chance.
The better the local Shops and Businesses do the more jobs we create, it really is that simple. It is something that revolves.

For most Retailers The Christmas Period is vital and from what I am hearing most people had a ' Good Enough' week so hopefully the end of a bad period for the Town and Country as a whole is coming to an end and to better times ahead. Certainly Kanturk as a trading town is doing as good if not better than most towns, a lot of this is down to having a wide variety of good quality shops in all sectors, so hopefully this trend will continue into the future.

One thing is for sure the last few weeks have been hectic in Kanturk with lots happening and it just proves what a great place we live in.

So for now from everybody involved in Kanturk Chamber Of Commerce
have A Happy Christmas & A Prosperous New Year and hopefully see as many as possible as soon as possible.
